Join Our Competitive Team

Welcome to our competition team: Fire Power Gymnastics! If your athlete has prior gymnastics or pre-team experience, trying out for our competitive team is the perfect next step! Gymnastics is unique—it’s both an individual and a team sport where athletes celebrate personal victories while contributing to a total team score. Athletes can try out and compete as early as age 5!

At Top Kids Gym & Sports, we use a blended track approach to build confident, successful competitors:

  • Starting in XCEL: We introduce our lower-level athletes to the competition world through the USAG Xcel track. It offers more flexibility, fosters creativity, and lets beginners (starting at Bronze) highlight their unique strengths.

  • Advancing to JO: As athletes master the discipline and structure of the sport, we transition them to the USAG Jr. Olympic (Development Program) track to tackle the higher-level competitive skills.

The Four Events (Women's Artistic Gymnastics)

Women's gymnastics requires an incredible mix of strength, flexibility, and precision. Our athletes train and compete across four distinct apparatuses:

  • Vault (Power & Explosion): Athletes sprint down the runway, launch off the springboard, and perform high-flying flips and twists before fighting for a perfectly "stuck" landing.

  • Uneven Bars (Strength & Timing): A crowd favorite! Gymnasts use immense upper-body strength to link continuous swings, pirouettes, and daring, high-flying release moves.

  • Balance Beam (Focus & Precision): At just four inches wide, the beam requires ultimate concentration. Gymnasts must execute leaps, turns, and tumbling passes with the same confidence and power as if they were on the floor.

  • Floor Exercise (Personality & Endurance): An exciting 90-second routine set to music! Gymnasts combine expressive dance choreography with powerful, gravity-defying tumbling passes.

The USAG Xcel Program

The Flexible, Individually-Focused Competitive Path

The Xcel program is a fantastic alternative competitive track that allows kids to experience the thrill of competition without the massive time commitment of the Development Program.

  • The Structure: Instead of strict numbered levels, Xcel uses divisions (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, and Sapphire). The best part? Routines are custom-choreographed to highlight a gymnast's unique strengths and hide their weaknesses, rather than forcing everyone to do the exact same compulsory skills.

  • The Commitment: Xcel requires fewer hours in the gym. This allows athletes to pursue other sports, school activities, and hobbies while still being part of a dedicated gymnastics team.

  • The Vibe: Fun, flexible, and inclusive. It keeps kids in the sport they love, builds immense confidence, and provides the competitive team experience with a healthy work-life balance.

The USAG Development Program (Formerly Junior Olympics / JO)

The Traditional, High-Intensity Competitive Path

This is the traditional, rigorous track designed for gymnasts who have their sights set on high-level competition, collegiate scholarships, or even elite-level (Olympic) goals.

  • The Structure: Gymnasts progress through strict, standardized levels (Levels 1–10). In the early levels, every gymnast across the country performs the exact same "compulsory" routine to perfect their foundational technique.

  • The Commitment: This track requires a major commitment of time, energy, and discipline. As gymnasts move up in levels, they often train multiple days a week, year-round.

  • The Vibe: Highly structured, intense, and deeply rewarding for highly driven kids who want gymnastics to be their primary sport.

The USAG TOPS Program

(Talent Opportunity Program)

The Specialized Path for Future Elite Gymnasts

The TOPS program is an early-identification and training program designed specifically for young, exceptionally driven female gymnasts (typically ages 7 to 10). It is geared toward finding and developing athletes who show the potential to one day compete at the highest Elite or Olympic levels.

  • The Structure: Unlike the Development or Xcel tracks, which focus on learning full routines for regular competitions, TOPS focuses heavily on extreme physical conditioning and elite basics. Gymnasts undergo state and national testing on specific physical abilities (like timed press handstands, leg lifts, sprint speed, and extreme flexibility) as well as foundational skills. Top-scoring athletes across the country are invited to an exclusive National training camp.

  • The Commitment: Exceptionally high. TOPS training is usually done in addition to a gymnast's regular Development Program practices. It requires intense focus, extra hours in the gym dedicated purely to strength and conditioning, and a family ready to support a serious athletic journey.

  • The Vibe: Intense, elite-driven, and highly specialized. It is built for young athletes who possess a unique combination of natural physical ability, fearless ambition, and a relentless work ethic.
